So, I own a Land Rover Discovery 2 and i like to off road in it. Much like Doug Demuro, I enjoy being in a nice place while traversing rocks and mud. However, I recently removed the active roll control pump, as it is prone to failing and catastrophic damage. Now 3 weeks after I removed the entire system, my power steering is failing. It seems to be a blockage in the lines, as it causes difficult steering and after shutting the engine down during research yesterday, it over-pressured the fluid out of the reservoir. I'm assuming this could be a bad pump, bad reservoir, and also blocked lines. The fluid is looking pretty nasty and definitely needs to be changed. But here is my problem, I have rudimentary tools, mostly useful for changing brake pads and oil. I will be purchasing the parts I need but I need a place to work and if possible a friend to help out. I am confident in my ability to wrench on the ole girl. I also have a 2 different video walkthroughs on how to replace all the parts, so I'm curious if any Nashville oppos would like to meet up and turn some wrenches and have a few beers. Generally speaking, it sucks to spend 10 years after high school in the military and get out and have no friends. I find it very awkward to make friends now. I've moved to a new city, away from family, I have a new job but most people in my field don't really get into cars like I do. Also if anyone knows of a short term mechanics garage rental that would be awesome. We had those on the various military bases I was stationed at and I spent many hours and cases of Yuengling working on fellow Marines cars and trucks. Cheers and have an insane Disco for your time.

Oh my Land Cruiser brother. The dying breed of real-deal SUV's. I only wish that I wouldn't have to do an insane amount of work to get the manual in mine like many of your rigs are. Although, once I swap the T-case later this year, the transmission is a relatively easy affair, so long as you have tools.

I really like these Disco's, sadly I am not in your area, also I haven't ever worked on one. But maybe some day I'll have one of my own, I'd be happy with a I or II.

Do the lines on these ever delaminate on the inside? That's a great way to cause a blockage in hydraulics, let me tell you - from encountering that in my younger bro's Series II's brakes.
I probably can't help, as I'm some hours from Nashville - there's a funeral I might be going to Saturday in TN, but I'm pretty sure good clothes and hydraulics don't mix.

80's never came with a manual in the states so the vast majority are slush boxes. I will probably do a manual conversion when I do my engine swap. NV4500 will probably be my poison of choice.

Here's the Oppo map . We appear to be thin on Oppo presence near Nashville, sadly.

I had wanted one since I was a kid. My dad was a wholesale car dealer and flipped like 10 of these one summer. I washed and detailed every one and just loved the space and style. I think Jeeps are ok, and I like old Land Cruisers, but they don't have the muscular good looks of the Disco, nor do any of them have the power and torque. I'm learning from the forums that they are pretty easy to work on, just take your time and thinigs will work out alright. They have a great aftermarket supply chain and the people that build them up are humble, nice, and fun to hang out with.

What you aren't going to roll coal with the Cummins swap? Just kidding. That's cool man.

Well I pulled the rigid hydraulic lines from the counter-roll suspension. Still need to remove the shock for each end, one per axle. The power steering lines are rubber and as my pops let the ole girl sit while I was in Japan for 2 years, many things have deteriorated and need to be replaced. Another issue is that the counter roll pump leaked constantly all over the steering box and swaybar and hoses so i'm sure the hydraulic fluid caused some of the damage, also the PB BLaster I dosed it with to clean all the residue when I pulled the counter-roll lines out probably did some damage.

That's awesome, great to hear that the people in the Disco community are good people. As for the engine aren't they an evolution of a Buick block?
Also, I would love to find a unicorn manual example of one of these.

You want my advice? i suggest get an 04 D2, make sure it has the real CDL t-case and linkage, then buy the R380 new from Lucky8 and do the swap yourself. The 4.6 is a much better and stronger motor.

It is/was supposed to be editable - but it may have been locked by whoever the ostensible "owner" is or require being logged into Google. I don't recall.

Look up the Luck8 unicorn, they have had 2 now that are fully built that they did manual swaps with. And of course countless customers who have swapped trannies

Yes - that engine is a devel0pment of the 1960s Buick 215. It has press-in liners instead of cast in, and by the time of the D2 it has a larger bore and cross-bolted "A36" block with larger journals and somewhat different heads.

Ok I will attempt to modify it. That's genuinely a shame about not having many Oppos here. There is a serious car scene here, crazy daily drivers and a great C&C every month and actually most weekends.

I suppose $1700 is not so bad on top of the low-low prices Discoveries seem to be going to and I could try to find one with a blown trans. Which I have come across in the past.

Last November I was looking for an SUV to drive in Winter and checked out an '04 Disco. It looked nice but otherwise I kinda hated it. I didn't buy it and instead got a Grand Cherokee. Your post reminds me of why I'm happy with my choice.

I'm in the greater nashville area. I'm probably going to work on my Cobalt this weekend. But you are welcome to use space on my driveway for wrenching. But it is inclined at 10 degrees. Jacque8080 at gmail dot com.

Good for you. I hate how my aggressive brain reads text as constantly sarcastic and dickish. My mom had a limited when I was a teenager, I remember it being a total POS. My grandma who lives almost in the UP Michigan, has a 85 Cherokee, manual, and a late 90s Laredo, it has served her well, but I trememdously dislike the styling and find them ineffectual off road. I was wheeling a couple years back and got high and centered trying to recover a chop top xterra, so we had my buddies gf go home to get her Jeep, and she got stuck practically on her side, and when we tried to rock it to gain traction and it snapped the driveshaft. So dainty it was.

Cool, another Nashville Oppo. Issue is, I need to first pinpoint the problem and then order the subsequent parts. While replacing everything is probably the best option, that's going to be a hard sell to my wife. Her first response is why don't we sell it. Of course, something I bought almost 10 years ago, is paid for, and our other vehicle is a 95 Nissan 4x4 with 238k miles. I dislike interacting with non-gearheads.

Not meant to be sarcastic. Just that I had 3 goals:
1. Gives me the ability to drive around Madison, WI when it snows.
2. Comfy
3. Cheap
The issues you're having are a bit counter to my goal #3.
As for a more useful suggestion, are you on any Land Rover forums? You may find someone in your area who has garage space to work on your truck. Many moons ago I needed to change a coil pack on a Miata but I was a college kid with no tools. Went on the forums and found someone with a nice garage at their house who was happy to lend a hand.
